An Innovation in Public Heritage Education
The University of Robben Island (URI) is an innovation in public heritage education that re-historicises the clandestine University of Robben Island experience to recover, preserve and transmit the Island’s intangible literary heritage.
Inspired by the political prisoners who transformed Robben Island into “our university”, URI creates educational experiences that connect people with one of the world’s most significant World Heritage Sites through literature, storytelling, documentary, dialogue, research and cultural exchange.
Working in partnership with UNESCO and other national and international collaborators, URI transforms heritage from something people simply visit into something they actively experience, study, interpret and help preserve.
